1. Slugs Have Thousands of Tiny Teeth

Not just a few. A slug's tongue-like organ (called a radula) can have over 20,000 microscopic teeth. They don't chew like we do. They scrape food away like a living cheese grater.

2. Some Slugs Can Hang Upside Down

Their mucus is surprisingly strong. Certain species can produce a special slime that lets them dangle from branches like a very unenthusiastic spider.

3. Slugs Are Mostly Water

Many slugs are around 80–90% water, which explains why they hate hot, dry weather and why they seem to vanish whenever the sun remembers Britain exists.

4. They Can Stretch Dramatically

A slug can squeeze through gaps much smaller than its resting size because it has no bones. It's basically a mobile bag of determination.

5. Slime Does Different Jobs

Slug mucus isn't all the same:

The leopard slug (Limax maximus) has been studied in space experiments because scientists wanted to understand how it navigates and responds to weightlessness.

Leopard slugs can grow up to 20 cm long and have beautiful spotted patterns that genuinely resemble a leopard's coat. If they weren't covered in slime, people would probably put them on greeting cards.

11. A Slug Can Survive Losing a Surprising Amount of Moisture

Some species can shrink considerably during dry conditions and recover when moisture returns.

12. Banana Slugs Are Bright Yellow

Banana slugs (Ariolimax species) can be yellow, green, brown, or spotted, but the bright yellow ones really do look like abandoned bananas lying in the forest.

If a slug crawls over a razor blade, it generally won't be cut. Its mucus and body structure distribute the pressure so effectively that it can glide over surprisingly sharp objects.
